Kiev Brocade
is a wonderful jacket-weight fashion fabric for 2007. The 'background' is a poly silky fabric with
a variegated, hand-dyed look. A coarser cotton is woven
in, creating an interesting contrast and texture in the design.
The fabric has body but is not overly heavy or stiff, so it
drapes softly and does not wrinkle easily. The reverse side also
looks quite nice and could be suitable for a
garment where the wrong side of the fabrics shows such as
The Soho Coat or
Haiku Two from The
Sewing Workshop.
This fabric was featured in the
August/September 2006 Vogue Pattern Catalogue
It was also spotted in a downtown Toronto
women's fashion store made up in brown in a semi-fitted jacket
by Tribal. The collar, sleeves and pockets were trimmed
with a coordinating brown crushed velveteen.
The fabric is 62% Cotton / 38% Polyester and
60" /
150 cm wide. There is a distinct direction and repeat in
the brocade pattern, so you might want to purchase additional
fabric for matching or aligning the horizontal components of the
design. Use a "with nap" pattern layout. The
horizontal design repeats every 4" or 10 cm. A total
pattern repeat occurs every 8" or 20 cm. Exact matching is probably overkill.
Fabric care recommendations include machine
washing in cool water on gentle and hanging up to dry.
Iron on a low setting. The garment may also be dry
cleaned.
