Vest Pattern #918.

The Inside Story:
This class is based on Modular Design for Signature Style (as
seen in Threads Magazine Issue #117 Jan 2005). Modular
Design is the name of Kayla’s pattern company; the designs are
created from simple geometric shaped pattern pieces, with unique
seaming connections. This style has no button darts, zippers or
facing; therefore it is a great uncomplicated introduction to
garment sewing.
In this class students
will learn to create Kayla’s simple, but elegant, style
clothing. Students will learn to create Kayla’s signature style
seams, and also to mix-and-match pattern pieces from many
patterns (a sleeve from one pattern and a front panel from
another). Many students even modify pattern pieces and create
their own unique designs. Modular design is also great for
highlighting hand-dyed or embellished fabrics, as well as being
a simple, easy-to-fit, easy-to-wear, and great-for-travel style
of clothing. Designs can be made of elegant silks for a formal
“Couture Artwear” look, or in cottons, linens and rayons, for
wonderful daytime wardrobe pieces.
Everyone will
construct the Panel Vest
from Kayla's Modular Design pattern No. 918 using techniques
covered in the class. The class will be divided into two
groups: one group of 13 will use the rolled hem technique
to finish the seams of the
Panel Vest; the
second group will use the sewing machine to finish the seams by
lining the panels or other technique of their choice.
The skill level is set
at intermediate to ensure that participants have the technical
skills to use a serger and a computerized sewing machine.
If you are a confident beginner and have experience with these
machines, you will likely be able to participate in the class.
The classroom will be equipped with 13 Bernina sergers and 25
Bernina computerized sewing machines capable of embroidery and
utility stitches. The sewing machine will not be a
hoop-type embroidery machine, but will be able to create the
satin stitch and bar tack stitches Kayla uses in her seaming
techniques.
Do not be deterred by
the kit fee of $50. It is well worth over double that
amount and represents a real bargain. The kit contents
were compiled with input from Kayla, Bernina Canada and
Distinctive Sewing Supplies. For the students who will be
using the rolled hem serger technique, the kit includes enough
coordinated handmade batik rayon to construct The Panel Vest.
The fabric has been prewashed and therefore ready to cut and
sew. This kit also contains three 1000m cones of best
quality Madeira rayon embroidery thread in a coordinating or
contrasting colour to use on the serger. A vial of
coordinating or contrasting 4mm Czech glass beads are included
as well as The Panel Vest pattern. For students who will
be constructing their garment solely on the sewing machine,
there is sufficient handmade batik rayon to make a fully lined
Panel Vest.
Also included are Czech glass beads, two 100m spools of matching
Mettler Metrosene poly thread and one spool of coordinating or
contrasting 100m spool of Madeira rayon embroidery thread.
The kits come in a wide variety of handpicked colours and
prints, so there should be something for everyone's tastes.
Everything in the kit is new and premium quality.
Seldom do you get an
opportunity to learn from textile artist whose designs have been
acclaimed over and over again. Kayla is a grandmother but
so young at heart and enthusiastic that the experience of being
in the classroom with her will be wonderful. To learn more
about Kayla, visit her website at
www.kaylakennington.com;
but be warned, you can spend hours enjoying the eye candy in
that Gallery of hers!
To make your experience enjoyable, please be sure to bring the
