121c6 - Industrial Shortcuts (25)
This one day class
will be held on Thursday, October 16,
2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Skill Level: All Levels
Class Description: Sew
faster, easier and achieve the look of designer ready-to-wear
with speed techniques from the garment industry adapted for home
sewing. Learn about cutting, pattern preparation, handling
fabric, flat felled seams, zippers, pockets, mitering and more.
All without pins or basting! Double your sewing speed! Elevate
your personal sewing skills! Get the clean finishes you’ve
always wanted!
Kit Fee: $15
The Inside Story: Last
year this class sold out before the end of August 2007 and many
clients told me they were disappointed that they couldn't take
the class. If you are interested, register early and avoid
disappointment. The classroom will only hold 25 students.
You will learn from
Rosebud lots of tricks and tips form the ready-to-wear garment
industry. These techniques help ensure a professional
result and avoid that "homemade" look that we all dread.
The techniques that you learn increase your sewing speed so your
projects will be completed much faster and you will be much
happier with your results. And you won't be afraid to
tackle curves, mitres, flat felled seams, darts or pintucks,
just to mention a few.
A word about the skill
level: "All Levels" means there is something in this class
for everyone. But, you must be able to operate a sewing
machine with confidence. If you've never sewn before you
need to get some training and practice on a sewing machine
before taking the class. For the rest of you, whether you
are a beginner or have been sewing all your life, this class is
terrific. I personally have been sewing since I was a
child. I took this class when I was in my forties.
It changed the whole way I looked at sewing. I had been
over-working, over-pinning and pressing everything the wrong way
for years. Now I seldom have a problem tackling the most
complicated garments with confidence. It's never too late
to learn these techniques.
Seldom do you get an
opportunity to learn from a teacher with real life experience. And by
that I mean someone who has actually worked in a garment factory
and has lived in the world of piece-work. Rosebud, not
only has that experience, but she is a Certified Islander Sewing
Systems™ instructor who is in demand all over the United States.
She also has her own custom sewing business. I have been
taught by Rosebud and she is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and
friendly teacher. You will have a wonderful experience
taking Industrial Shortcuts with her.
To make your experience enjoyable, please be sure to bring the
items outlined in the
Supply List. |

The Inside Story: This
class was held at last Fall's Creative Festival.
Originally the class size was limited to 20 and we were asked to
open it to more students because of the demand. In order
to do that we hired a teacher's assistant. We will do the
same this year. The teacher's assistant is also a
Certified Islander Sewing Systems™ instructor.
In this class you will
be making a convertible collar Tommy Bahama style shirt.
Tommy Bahama is a high-end fashion retailer specializing in
sophisticated but relaxed leisure wear for men and women.
We have a Tommy Bahama store here in Oakville, Ontario, and I
visited the Las Vegas store earlier in the year. The shirt
you will be making from The Islander Shirt sewing pattern by
Janet Pray is identical in style.
The Tommy Bahama shirt
is based on Hawaiian shirts made popular in the 1950s and 1960s
by celebrities such as Elvis and the Beach Boys. This
shirt has never gone out of style. Made in quality drapey
silk or rayon, it is an easy fitting classic that looks great on men and
women. Wear it loose over chinos, capri pants or leggings
(if you can wear them) and you look pulled together and relaxed.
This class involves
pre-class purchases and preparation, meaning that you must arrive at class with your fabric
fabric prewashed, cut out and interfacing applied according to
the instructions in the
Supply List. In order to do that
you must have purchased The Islander Shirt pattern, your fashion
fabric, and interfacing. When you register for class, you
will be sent the
Supply List,
a copy is provided here for your information. If you do
not complete your homework and bring the supplies outline in the
Supply List,
you will only be able to observe the class.
In order to make the
classroom experience even easier, you may purchase a
Shirt Kit here at
special prices starting at 27% savings of the regular price.
Shirt Kit contents are
available while quantities last.
Your instructor
Rosebud is an experienced and energetic teacher. She can
make a custom shirt in three hours. You will be making
yours in one day while learning from an expert shirt maker.

123c3 - Easy Zippers (25)
Skill Level: Intermediate
Class Description: Finally fool proof zippers! Master industrial sewing
secrets for setting slot, lapped and invisible zippers
without using pins as you make samples for future
reference! Discover the best zipper foot to use; garment
prep; how to avoid puckers with invisible zippers; tips
for facings and waistbands. What's the best location for
these zippers and how to achieve smooth flat seams on
curved or straight seams
Kit $15
This three hour workshop
is held on Saturday, October 18,
2008, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
The Inside Story: Last year this was a full
day class. The class was a success but it wasn't sold out.
Many people said that they just didn't want to devote a whole
day to sewing zippers. So instead of sewing five zipper
types, this class now covers three, the slot zipper, the lapped
zipper (on a curved seam) and the invisible zipper in three
hours. The kit however, contains samples to make five
zipper types (mock trouser and traditional trouser) if you
decide to purchase the
Easy Zipper DVD and learn they techniques that way. If
you take the Industrial Shortcuts class, you will cover the slot
zipper and possibly the lapped zipper. However, this class
will give you additional practice plus the bonus of learning how
to apply the invisible zipper. In addition, waistband
application is covered.
Please bring thread,
scissors, small ruler, seam ripper and basic sewing supplies to
class.
A word about skill
level: if you are confident enough to run a sewing
machine, you can easily benefit from this class. The
primary reason why we raised the skill level from "All Levels"
to "Intermediate" was because students with no sewing experience
whatsoever registered for the class last year. As you can
appreciate, in a three hour class there is no time to teach
someone the basics of machine operation and teach a class as
well. This class is great for confident beginners up to
intermediate who want to learn industrial zipper application.
Rosebud has sewn miles
of zippers in her lifetime working both in the garment industry
and teaching students. Her enthusiasm and clear manner of
speaking ensure a great classroom experience. |

124c3 - Sewing Shortcuts: Apronology (25)
Skill Level: All Levels
Class Description:
Improve your sewing skills and have professional
looking results with easy, speed techniques. Rosebud
will share secrets for handling curves, setting pockets,
flat felled seams, yokes and hems as you create a
designer apron without using a single pin or basting.
Kit $15
This three hour workshop
is held on Sunday, October 19,
2008, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
The Inside Story: This class is new this
year. It is designed for those who can't take Thursday off
and attend the full day Industrial Shortcuts class. It is
a quick way to pick up some of the basic techniques while
completing a great little project. If you take the
Industrial Shortcuts class, the same techniques will be covered
in this class so you might not want to take both of them, unless
you want additional practice making while making a designer
apron.
The kit contains only
first quality 100% coordinated cotton prints from brand name
companies such as M&S Textiles, Alexander Henry and Art Gallery
Quilts. Kit contents vary so first come first served in the
matter of choice of print and colours.
Bring quality
polyester thread, scissors, small ruler, seam riipper and basic
sewing supplies to class.
Students must be able
to confidently operate a sewing machine on their own to benefit
from this class. |
